Camping and More Camping |
24.Jul.08
|
|
Considering
we haven't tent camped since we had kids we really dove in head first
over the last month. It started with the annual
Emrie Family Camping Reunion over July 4th weekend. Some of
the family started early with a couple days down at the Gasconade while
we joined the group for a couple days at the Caton Ranch. I'll
have to credit the Violette's for many of the pictures in this bunch.
We took advantage of being in the Fenton area and stopped in for short
visits with Grandma W. and Grampa and Miss Maureen. All in all a
great weekend with the family and our new tent worked out great.
It's sort of a two room condo tent, plenty of space. Highlights of
the weekend were the kids tie-dying each other and charades at the fire.
The kids really got into it and by kids I mean everyone under age 70.
With one successful tent camping
weekend under our belt we felt bullish and did it again (the reunion was
not really roughing it too much considering there was a swimming pool
and a big house for showers and the occasional escape to air
conditioning). This time we met a couple of Joe's fraternity
brothers and their families at
Sterling State Park on Lake Erie in Michigan. The campsite had
great amenities including a big playground, nice showers, and a big
beach. The kids played until they crashed and the adults got to
reminisce about the good old days over a few beers. Highlights of
this trip include the Kuhne's one-upping the Beverly Hilbillies with
packing style, running the skunks out of the campsite, and the
Baldetti's minivan napping.

Beach Wedding, Uncle Curtis
Visits, and Mathias' Dedication |
12.Jul.08
|
|
We
finally went through all of the pictures from our
trip to Florida. It was a great combo trip with a wedding on
the beach, playing in the sand, and visiting family. We should
have stayed a few more days.
Uncle Curtis came to visit a couple
weekends ago and while he was here he went to
Bastian's swimming lesson. The boys had a great time playing
with Uncle Curtis.
On Sunday of that weekend we had
Mathias dedicated at our church. The boys have both been a
blessing to us and this dedication ceremony was to declare that we will
raise them to know and love God.
Coming soon: pictures from the
Emrie Family Reunion... |

First Haircut, Royal Feast,
and a Trip to Hoisington |
23.Jun.08
|
The
last month has treated us well. We finally made it out of cold
season so it's nice to have all four of us healthy at the same time
again. Now we are working on the house and yard while enjoying the
17 year cicada invasion. Notable events included
Mathias' first haircut. As it was with Bastian, Mathias seemed
to age a whole year just by getting his hair cut. I guess you
can't stop them from growing into little boys. Bastian's preschool
class had a castle project that culminated in a
royal feast for which all the kids dressed in costume. We made
it back to
Hoisington for a visit over Memorial Day weekend. As usual, GG,
Aunt Sissy, Grandad, and the Kansas Aunties spoiled the kids rotten.
Another highlight was the trip to Florida for Kristin and Dustin's
wedding on the beach. While we were there we visited Deanna, Paul,
and Anna Grace. Those pictures will be posted soon... |

Mathias' 1st Birthday |
04.May.08
|
Time
flies when you're having fun. It's hard to believe Mathias is
already one. (Joe didn't mean to make that rhyme!) The big
activity last month was planning
Mathias' 1st birthday party. Unfortunately, Mathias caught a
bug of some sort and his 103°F fever prompted us to cancel the party at
the last minute. The grandparents were already here, or in route,
so we celebrated a bit anyway. There were plenty of arms to take
turns holding him which is all he really wanted. Jen baked another
fantastic cake although we couldn't get Mathias to eat any. The
next day he was feeling a bit better and got to open and play with his
gifts. |

Easter, Cousins Visit, and
Video Clip Catchup |
07.Apr.08
|
We
took an extended Easter weekend and drove to the St. Louis area to visit
family. While there we enjoyed time at
Gran's,
Grampa's,
Uncle Tom's and Gramma's houses. The following weekend
Mitch, Jen, and Sophie came to spend the weekend with us. It
was great to catch up with all the family.
We also organized the
video
clips taken so far this year. We have great clips of us
sledding in the front yard,
Mathias crawling and
practicing to walk,
Bastian stunt sledding,
Bastian skiing for the first time, baby
Sophia laughing, and a mean but funny clip of
Mathias crying for food. |

Circus and Skiing |
10.Mar.08
|
The
"Greatest
Show On Earth" came to town so we took the kids to see what they
thought about the circus. Mathias had sensory overload and Bastian
enjoyed the cotton candy. It was so much entertainment for them
that they both fell asleep in our laps near the end.
This past weekend God dumped 14" of
beautiful snow on us. We took the rare opportunity to head to our
local ski area and
teach Bastian to ski. He did just great and we enjoyed our
short day of skiing on the local "hill" called Perfect North. |

This and That |
19.Feb.08
|
We
took it pretty easy in January with Bastian's surgery but we did take a
few pics here and there. First we rang in the new year with a nice
snow fall in the first week and some
sledding time in the front yard. Then we had
Bastian's surgery and were blessed with excellent execution,
painless recovery, and clear pathology. Praise God! And
finally a couple cute pics of
Mathias' crazy hair after bath time. |

Video Clips from 2007 |
17.Feb.08
|
| Joe
realized that we haven't posted any short video clips since Mathias was
born (bad dadda) so he finally took the time to go through them all.
In total there are 19 video clips from 2007 and we think less than half
of them were previously posted so if you like our short video clips you
might want to visit the
2007
Videos in the album. |

San Diego |
26.Jan.08
|
We
spent the last few days of 2007
visiting family in San Diego. It was great to see Clint and
Marcia again and a blessing to finally meet baby Avery. While
there we saw wild seals, dolphins, and whales and enjoyed the sun.
We also had a nice dinner with Joe's cousins, Tammy and Tarcey, and
their boys, Thomas and Carwyn. A great way to end the year.
Our flight was cancelled on the return and after a 5 hour reroute
through Atlanta we arrived home 2 minutes before midnight on New Years
Eve! |

Merry Christmas and Happy New
Year |
17.Jan.08
|
It's
the new year and I am already behind. Things have been a bit busy
around here with the house and, for those who haven't heard, preparing
for and recovering from Bastian's surgery. The good news is that
the surgery went great and Bastian is recovering nicely. Praise
God! Thanks to everyone who offered up prayers and help and a
special thanks to the grandparents who all came to support us and take
care of Mathias. In the meantime I have finally filtered through
all of the
pictures from our trip home over Christmas. It was a quick
trip but we still managed to fit in about 5 different family gatherings.
We also spent a few days in San Diego visiting Clint, Marcia, and Avery.
Those pictures will get posted soon.
Also, back in October I uploaded
some pictures of Mathias eating solid foods for the first time but
apparently forgot to post it in the blog. So,
here they are. |

Giving Thanks for Family and
Rock Music |
03.Dec.07
|
Thanksgiving
is a time to pause and give thanks for all of the blessings God gives us
every day of the year. This past month we have four things that
we are thankful for:
1. That
Sammy Hagar included the Taft Theater here in Cincinnati on his tour
schedule
2. For
safety glasses and big hammers
3. That it now only takes us 7 hours
of travel to
meet up with the Violettes somewhere in between us
4. That God gave us a beautiful snow to top off a wonderful
Thanksgiving spent in Hoisington

Happy Halloween and Another
New Addition |
04.Nov.07
|
 The
last couple weeks have been pretty laid back for us. We started
kicking off Mathias' first Halloween by going to a
pumpkin patch where Bastian got to pick out his own pumpkin.
Then
Gran came to visit so Bastian had another round of "cookin' with
Gran" and we got a few great pics of her with the boys. Finally
wrapping the Halloween season up with dressing up and doing a little
trick-or-treating.In
the meantime our family was treated to some fantastic news. Mitch
and Jen adopted a beautiful newborn baby girl! Praise God for
making Mitch and Jen's dreams come true. We can't wait to meet
baby
Sophia Emrie Bohnak. |

Welcome to the World, Avery
Beth Little |
20.Oct.07
|
We
have recently welcomed a new addition into the family. Clint and
Marcia are the proud new parents of Avery Beth. Avery was born on
10 Oct, weighed 6lbs 3oz, and was 19.5 inches long. Avery and her
new parents are doing great. Congratulations to Clint and Marcia
and may God bless your new arrival! Click
here for a few pictures.
Also,
after going through all the pictures we took while family visited and
visiting family, I finally have them all sorted out. I'll try to
keep this short so here's the list:

Settling In and Visiting
Family |
14.Oct.07
|
Sorry it's been so long since our last post but we have been a bit busy
settling into the new house, unpacking, decorating, and traveling around
the Midwest visiting family. We haven't been taking many pictures
lately but I did post a few from when
Gramma and Grampa came to help us move in,
visiting
Grandma W and
Grampa's boat, and when
Grandad came to visit. Coming soon are all the pictures from
our visit to Kansas and maybe even a few pics of the new house. :) |

Trip Update - Over the Alps
and Back to Frankfurt |
07.Sep.07
|
Well,
our trip is long over but we're just getting caught up with the last few
pictures. After leaving Italy we traveled north over the Alps
through
Switzerland,
Liechtenstein, and Switzerland again, finally stopping for a couple
nights at the
Bodensee on the Austria side. We had extended our Wohnmobil
rental an additional 5 days and had planned to spend that on the
Bodensee but the weather was bad so we decided to drive the Romantische
Strasse. On the Romantische Strasse we visited
Augsburg,
Nördlingen, and
Rothenburg ob der Tauber. While in Rothenburg we had a nice
treat. Pink was in town for an open-air festival nearby so while
sitting outside our Wohnmobil with a bottle of wine we enjoyed her live
concert. Finally we had to return the Wohnmobil to
Frankfurt. Our last couple days in Europe were spent unloading
the Wohnmobil into the hotel, repacking, thinning down, and then
repacking again. In the end we managed to get everything into a
rental van, to the airport, and on the plane.
This was truly an experience of a
lifetime. Our family was absolutely blessed to have this time
together. We hope you enjoyed our trip blog.

Trip Update - Monaco and
Tuscany |
14.Aug.07
|
It was tough to leave the beautiful weather in the Riviera but we were
treated to wonderful vistas as we drove the coastal highway with one
cliff top curve, tunnel, and bridge after another. On our way to
Italy we stopped for lunch in
Monaco. Monaco is an independent
principality and is most famous for the Monte Carlo casino and F1 race.
You could smell the money there.
We could tell we were entering Italy
as the landscape and architecture style changed. Our first
destination was Florence where we had a
Tuscan cooking class scheduled.
This time we took the class together while Chef Barbara's mother took
care of Bastian and Mathias. It was another fantastic experience
and our first time making pasta from scratch. The roads in and out
of Florence are incredibly narrow but the Wohnmobil came through without
injury.
The next few days were spent
sightseeing in
Florence. We could have spent another week there.
We found a campsite on a hill overlooking the city and only a short bus
ride to the center. Florence holds many famous exhibits, including
Michelangelo's David, but of course we could not take any pictures in
the galleries. At least we got some great pictures of the
architecture and a few good night shots.
From Florence we daytripped to
Siena. Another beautiful Tuscan city with narrow streets, great
architecture, and huge plazas. We took the small roads through the
Chianti wine region on our way back to Florence. Although we still
prefer Bordeaux wines, Tuscany has much more beautiful landscape and you
can't go wrong with a good Chianti Classico. We enjoyed dinner on
a vine covered terrace overlooking some of this beautiful landscape.
On our way out of Tuscany we
visited
Pisa to see the Torre Pendente (leaning tower). It really
looks like it should fall over. It is in a complex called the
Campo dei Miracoli (field of miracles) along with the Duomo (cathedral)
and Baptistry. Actually all of the buildings there are leaning but
none so famously as the tower. In 1993 the top of this 179 foot
tower was 17 feet from vertical. Recent work corrected the lean by
14 inches and allowed the tower to reopen in 2001.
From Pisa we headed north:
Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland again, Austria, Germany.
We'll wrap up the trip north of the Alps in the next post. |

Trip Update - Andorra, South
France, and Bastian's Birthday |
07.Aug.07
|
Sorry
for the late update but we have not had reliable internet access from
the campsites for the past couple weeks. Camping in Italy is not
the same as camping in France. But, we'll get to Italy later,
first let's wrap up France.
On our way to Andorra (a small
country in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain) we spent a
night in Foix, France, at a
campsite right on a small lake. There were many fields of
sunflowers in that area. The next day we drove into Andorra and
found a nice campsite right near the city center of
Encamp, Andorra. Andorra is popular for mountain trails and
hiking and Jen picked a wonderful 5k hike for us which we finished at a
tunnel through the rock at about 2500 meters elevation. By the end
of the hike we were ready for the boys to carry us for a while.
From Andorra we traveled
northeast out of the Pyrenees mountains and toward the sea to the Provence
region of France. We stayed in a city called
Aix en Provence where Jen was scheduled to take a cooking class.
The
Provence cooking class was an incredible experience for Jen and the
grounds of the chalet where Chef Marc lived and taught the class were as
wonderful as the food. While Jen was taking the class the boys did
some sightseeing.
From Aix en Provence we traveled
to the Côte d'Azur and spent some quality time on the beach in the
French Riviera in a town called
Saint Raphael, close to Saint Tropez. With bad weather in
northern France and cool temperatures and wind around Bordeaux we were
ready for some sun, and sun we got. We didn't see a cloud in at
least a week. Since Bordeaux, we had been flying by the seat of
our pants and were worried about finding a campsite in the Riviera
without a reservation. Well, I guess God thought we needed some
good sun time also so he helped us find a perfect place with a great
view overlooking the sea. Joe got a great night shot of the moon
reflecting off of the sea from our campsite (30 second exposure, ISO
100, F4 at 25mm for you photography nuts).
While in the Riviera we
celebrated
Bastian's 3rd birthday with a wonderfully decorated campsite in the
Cars theme (nice job by Jen preparing for this a couple of months ago).
Bastian was up bright and early ready to open presents so we did a
birthday breakfast and had chocolate ice cream for dessert. The
live entertainment was Joe trying to get Bastian's new kite to fly
without wind by running around the campsite with it (video to follow
later).
We also daytripped to
Grasse, France, a small town not far inland from Cannes. It is
famous for its perfume industry.
Unfortunately our time in the
Riviera was up so we left by
driving along the coast through Monaco and then on to Tuscany. But, that
will be for a later post... |

Trip Update - Brittany and
Aquitaine |
24.Jul.07
|
From
Saint Malo we traveled across the Brittany peninsula to
Carnac, France. This area is famous for prehistoric megaliths,
large standing stones. The Breton word for a single standing stone
is "menhir". There are simply thousands of them here with no
confirmed explanation for their purpose. Most interesting our the
ones arranged in nearly perfect lines over hundreds of meters.
Next stop is Aquitaine, most famous
for the Bordeaux wine region. Here we stayed at a
campground right on the beach on the Archachon Bassin. While
here we daytripped to
Bordeaux city. We also drove through the Medoc red wine region
of Bordeaux and
visited 2 chateaus. These chateaus and their surrounding
vineyards are simply beautiful. We learned a lot about Bordeaux
wines and tasted a few excellent ones.
Last stop from this area was the
Dune du Pyla, the tallest dune in Europe. It has been formed
over the centuries by Atlantic winds and is still growing and moving
east by a few meters every year. It was quite a strange site
seeing this huge pile of sand towering over the forest and offering a
view for a hundred miles in every direction. The dune itself is
about 2.5 kilometers long, 500 meters wide and 110 meters high.
Next stop - Andorra! |

Trip Update - Mont Saint
Michel and Saint Malo |
18.Jul.07
|
After
leaving the Normandy area we visited
Mont Saint Michel. It is truly one of the architectural
wonders of the world. The abbey, perched on a rock about 80 meters
above sea level, can be seen from miles away. Nestled up against
the perimeter of this rock is a touristy little village with one main
street, the Grande Rue. From the abbey you can see for miles in
every direction and you have a great view of the tidal basin. This
area floods with high tide and only the causeway is left for access.
Even some of the parking areas along the causeway are under water.
Close to Mont Saint Michel is the
walled city of
Saint Malo. Here we parked in an RV parking lot and took a bus
into the city. For 2.50 Euro we parked for the day and night and
rode the bus for free. Our cheapest night yet! While there
we took a boat bus across the bay to Dinard which gave us a wonderful
view of the whole city. On our way out of Saint Malo we toured the
Rance Tidal Power Station where they use the flow of the tidal water in
and out of the mouth of the Rance river valley to generate electricity. |

Trip Update - Normandy |
08.Jul.07
|
We
wrapped up our first week of the trip today by leaving the D-Day beach
area of Normandy. On the way to Normandy from Germany last Sunday
we spent one night at a
campsite in Peronne, France. In Normandy we stayed at a Yelloh!
campsite in St. Aubin sur mer, France. While there we met a
very nice family from Denmark who Bastian hung out with almost the whole
time. We also day tripped to several of the area sites.
First was
Bayeux, France, home of the 70 meter long Baxeux tapestry which
recounts the Norman conquest of England and is more than 900 years old.
Bayeux is also home to an impressive cathedral.
The next day we visited one of
the war memorials on top of a hill at
Arromanches, France. This memorial offered a 360° theater with
a short film showing contrasting views of D-Day and present day
Normandy. Also from this point we had a nice view of Gold beach
and the remains of the artificial Mulberry harbor used to facilitate the
landing of 2.5 million men and 0.5 million vehicles during the invasion.
Next we visited the
Normandy American Cemetery at Omaha beach, the larger of the two
American war cemeteries in the area. A very somber place.
From there we stopped at the
Pointe du Hoc Ranger Memorial. It is still deeply pitted with
old German bunkers and shell craters. It was crazy windy but the
rain finally stopped.
On the next day we took a long
drive up to
Étretat, France. Étretat has fabulous alabaster cliffs
including one famous for looking like an elephant dipping his trunk into
the ocean. |

Auf Wiedersehen Deutschland.
Kölle Alaaf! |
04.Jul.07
|
We
packed our household goods into the sea container, loaded up the motor
home, and headed off on our European adventure. Our last few days
in Germany were pretty tough, both physically with all the packing and
emotionally with saying goodbye. We will miss Germany
tremendously. In the last week we took a few pictures of
Bastian's last playgroup, our
last visit with Angela, our fantastic midwife, and
packing the house. Then we spent our
last evening in Cologne taking a few pictures of the neighborhood
and enjoying one last Kölsch with Ali, the owner of Bei mir zu Haus.
Da simmer dabei! Dat is prima! VIVA
COLONIA!

Hamburg, Germany, and Saying
Goodbye |
24.Jun.07
|
A
couple of weekends ago we went on our first weekend trip since Mathias
was born. It was a long holiday weekend so we drove up north to
Hamburg, Germany. Hamburg is a very nice port city on the
river Elbe. It is the 2nd largest port in Europe and might be
where our sea container will leave Germany when we move back to the US.
Mathias and Bastian both did great and since the sun was out the whole
weekend we spent the entire time outside sightseeing. Most notable
were the port tour and the Russian U-434 submarine tour, one of the
largest non-nuclear submarines in the world. Hamburg is referred
to as "the Venice of Germany" with it's many canals and water front
plazas.This past weekend
we had a small
farewell party with a few friends and their families. Our
nanny, Rachanee, and her boyfriend, Wolfgang, catered with a wonderful
mix of Thai and German foods. It was a very nice time and makes us
realize how much we will really miss Germany and the friends we have
made here. |
| |
|
|
Remagen, Playdates and
Visitors |
03.Jun.07
|
Summer
finally came and we had a couple weeks of hot and sunny weather.
Rachanee took advantage of that and set Bastian up with some
playtime with water on the balcony. She also had fun with
water by
teaching Bastian how to clean.
A couple of weekends ago
we visited a small town named Remagen. We believe this is
where one of Joe's ancestors, Hubert Joseph Weil, lived back in the late
1800's. As gravesites are typically reused in Germany after 30-40
years we didn't find Hubert but it was still a cute little town on the
Rhine river and worth a visit. Remagen also holds some historic
significance as it had the last standing bridge over the Rhine in WWII.
The bridge survived many attempts to destroy it by the Germans only to
finally collapse after the Allies had built a new temporary bridge
nearby to use. For a short history of Remagen visit the
Wikipedia
site or the official
Remagen website.
That same weekend we took a walk
to the stadium parking area where they had a huge
inflatable playground. Bastian had a blast jumping around and
sliding down the big inflatable slides.
The following week Bastian had a
playdate with Hannah, the granddaughter of our friend Gisela.
Joe's colleague
Huan and her sister Ming stopped by to visit Bastian and Mathias. And then, with
sadness, we watched our neighbors and good friends pack up and move back
to the US.
The boys got some last minute playtime in just before they drove off.
Not to worry as we will be seeing them again soon since we'll be moving
back ourselves in a few months.
And last but not least, Jen took
a great picture of
Mathias sleeping. |

Mathias' First Visitors |
20.May.07
|
The
last month has been a blur. We spent our time visiting with family
and friends in between relocation planning (more on that later).
Mathias'
first visitors were our friends the Scholes and of course our
friends and neighbors the Smiths. Shortly after that
Gran and Grandad came to visit. While they were here we toured
the
Rheinish Open-Air Museum in Kommern, Germany. It is an outdoor
museum of several restored buildings and an exhibition documenting the
immigration of people from the Rheinland of Germany to the US. We
also day tripped to Liege, Belgium, to see the sights and eat some fresh
Belgium waffles. |

More Pictures From the First
Days |
22.Apr.07
|
Jen
and Mathias came home from the hospital on Thursday afternoon under blue
skies and to the warm reception of Bastian, the proud big brother.
The last few days have been pretty relaxing including a few hours sleep
here and there. Joe added some more pictures to the album from
the first days (scroll down to see the new ones starting at #28). |

Praise God! Introducing
Mathias Joseph Weil |
19.Apr.07
|
Monday
was an incredible day for us. God gave us our second son, Mathias
Joseph Weil. He was born here in Cologne on 16 April 2007 at 20:47
CEDT, weighing 3530g (7.8 lb) and 55cm (21.7 in) long. Both baby
and momma are doing great and should come home from the hospital
tomorrow. Bastian is really stepping up into his new role as the
big brother. He really enjoys holding Mathias, giving him kisses
on the head, and cannot wait to watch the movie Cars with him. A
big thanks to all our friends and family for the thoughts and prayers.
Joe has posted a hand full of pictures from the first few days
here. More will come soon... |

Happy Easter, Frohe Ostern! |
12.Apr.07
|
We
hope everyone had a wonderful Easter. God and the weather has been
very good to us here in Cologne so the Easter season was full of joy and
sunshine. We started the long Easter weekend by taking a few
family pictures in front of a bright yellow bush in our yard.
Then we joined our friends Andrew and Alice with their 3 daughters,
Emily, Hannah, and Amy, on a day trip to the walled village of
Zons on the Rhein river followed by a ferry ride across the river
and then a nice dinner outside. Bastian had a blast throwing rocks
in the river with the girls and holding their hands while we walked (we
think he is a little sweet on Emily). On Saturday
Bastian colored Easter eggs with Austin and Dylan and then on Sunday
morning
Bastian found all the eggs hidden by the Easter Bunny the night
before.We also took a few
pictures of
Bastian enjoying bath time with the rubber ducky and bubbles from
Gramma and then cuddling in his new robe.
PS: No baby yet but we are
thinking it could be any day now. Please keep Jen in your prayers.
